Smart algorithm picks the right IV fluid for sepsis, saving lives

NCT ID NCT06253585

First seen Mar 28, 2026 · Last updated May 15, 2026 · Updated 7 times

Summary

This study tested a new way to choose which IV fluid to give sepsis patients in the emergency room. Using vital signs like temperature and blood pressure, an algorithm identified patients who would benefit more from balanced crystalloids than normal saline. Over 2,000 adults across six hospitals were randomly assigned to receive either the algorithm-guided fluid or usual care. The goal was to see if this personalized approach could lower the risk of death within 30 days.
