New device aims to bypass leg blockages without open surgery
NCT ID NCT02471638
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tested a device called the PQ Bypass System in 78 people with severe peripheral artery disease (blocked leg arteries). The device is designed to create a bypass inside the artery using small tubes (stent grafts) placed through a needle puncture, avoiding the need for traditional open surgery. The main goals were to see if the bypass stayed open and to check for serious complications like death, amputation, or the need for another procedure within a month.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
PQ Bypass System (a device to place stent grafts via a needle puncture instead of open surgery)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a less invasive way to restore blood flow in leg arteries, potentially reducing the need for traditional bypass surgery.
What could go wrong
This was a small, early study (78 people) with no comparison group, so results may not apply broadly. Risks include bleeding, infection, or the stent graft failing over time.
