Chest surgery recovery: pain patterns may predict outcomes

NCT ID NCT05450172

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study followed 204 adults who had chest surgery to see how their pain changed over time and whether that affected their recovery. Researchers used questionnaires to measure pain and recovery before surgery, a few days after, and up to 6 months later. The goal was to identify which pain patterns lead to incomplete recovery, so doctors can better support patients in the future.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this could help doctors identify patients at risk for poor recovery after chest surgery and tailor pain management to improve outcomes.

What could go wrong

This is an observational study, not a treatment trial. It cannot prove cause and effect, and results may not apply to all types of surgery or patient groups.
