Could a simple additive make nerve blocks last longer after chest surgery?
NCT ID NCT05851768
First seen Jun 30, 2026 · Last updated Jul 01, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This trial tests whether adding either dexmedetomidine or magnesium sulphate to the standard numbing medicine bupivacaine improves pain control after chest surgery. About 60 adults with cancer undergoing thoracotomy will receive one of three nerve-block combinations. The main goal is to see which approach reduces the total amount of morphine needed in the first 24 hours after surgery.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
bupivacaine with either dexmedetomidine or magnesium sulphate
What this could lead to
If one adjuvant works better, it could offer longer-lasting pain relief and reduce the need for morphine after chest surgery.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage comparison; results may not apply to all patients, and side effects from the added drugs are possible.
