New therapy aims to stop depression before it starts in At-Risk teens
NCT ID NCT06273137
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests a therapy called Positive Affect Treatment (PAT) to see if it can prevent depression in teenagers aged 12-16 who have experienced two or more adverse childhood events. The therapy involves 15 weekly sessions focused on building positive emotions and coping skills. Researchers will compare PAT to a waitlist or supportive therapy in up to 300 teens, measuring mood and reward sensitivity over a year.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Positive Affect Treatment (PAT) - a behavioral therapy with weekly sessions focusing on behaviors, cognitions, and compassion
What this could lead to
If successful, this could provide a new, non-drug way to prevent depression in teenagers who have faced difficult childhood experiences.
What could go wrong
This is an early-stage trial with a pilot phase and a larger phase. The therapy may not be more effective than standard supportive therapy, and results may not apply to all teens.
