Could a pneumonia shot save myeloma patients from deadly infections?

NCT ID NCT07154537

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026

Summary

Multiple myeloma patients are at high risk for serious bacterial infections like pneumonia. This study at National Taiwan University Hospital will give 101 patients either one or two doses of the PCV13 pneumonia vaccine to see which schedule is safer and boosts immunity better. Researchers hope to find a way to prevent these often-deadly infections.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could show that a simple vaccine schedule helps protect multiple myeloma patients from life-threatening pneumonia and blood infections.

What could go wrong

This is a small, single-hospital study. Earlier research suggests these vaccines may not work well in multiple myeloma patients, so the benefit may be limited.
