Could Plant-Based hospital drinks be as good as Milk-Based ones? a new study aims to find out
NCT ID NCT07399886
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This pilot study tests whether it's possible to run a larger trial comparing plant-based and animal-based oral nutritional supplements (ONS) in hospital patients at risk of malnutrition. Sixty patients from two Dutch hospitals will be randomly assigned to receive either a soy-based or milk-based drink for three months. The main goal is to see if patients will stick with the drinks and if the study measurements are practical, not to prove which drink is better.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
oral nutritional supplements (plant-based vs animal-based)
What this could lead to
If successful, this study could show that a larger trial comparing plant-based and animal-based nutritional drinks is possible, potentially leading to more sustainable hospital nutrition options.
What could go wrong
This is a small pilot study with only 60 participants, focused on feasibility rather than health outcomes. It may not show clear differences between the two types of supplements.
