Can a pea burger beat beef for blood health?
NCT ID NCT07766928
First seen Aug 17, 2026 · Last updated Aug 17, 2026
Summary
This study asks whether swapping a beef burger for a plant-based pea burger changes how the body handles fats and sugar after a meal. Ten adults with metabolic syndrome (and a BMI of 25 or higher) will eat both types of burgers on separate occasions in a crossover design. Researchers will measure blood triglycerides, glucose, and cholesterol levels after each meal to compare the two burgers' immediate effects.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Plant-based (pea) burger compared with a beef burger
- What this could lead to
- If plant-based burgers produce a healthier blood fat and sugar response than beef, this could support dietary swaps for people with metabolic syndrome.
- What could go wrong
- This is a very small, short-term trial measuring immediate blood changes, not long-term health outcomes. Results may not apply to all plant-based products or all people.
