C-Section blood pressure: which dose of phenylephrine works best?

NCT ID NCT07420127

First seen Jun 27, 2026 ยท Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study is testing two different doses of phenylephrine (75 vs 50 micrograms) given alongside oxytocin during C-sections to prevent low blood pressure. Oxytocin helps the uterus contract after delivery but can cause blood pressure to drop. The trial will enroll 112 women having planned C-sections under spinal anesthesia and compare how many have hypotensive episodes and how much extra phenylephrine is needed.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only โ€” not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
Phenylephrine
What this could lead to
If it works, this could identify the best dose of phenylephrine to prevent dangerous drops in blood pressure during C-sections.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-phase trial comparing two doses, so it may not find a clear winner. Results may not apply to all women having C-sections.
