New PET tracer could spot deadly lung disease years earlier
NCT ID NCT05452889
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This early-phase study tests whether a special PET scan tracer, 18F-fluoroglutamine, can detect pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) earlier and more accurately. PAH is a serious disease of the lung's blood vessels that often goes undiagnosed for years. The study will scan 71 adults with and without PAH to see if the tracer highlights diseased areas in the lungs and heart.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
18F-fluoroglutamine (a radioactive tracer for PET imaging)
What this could lead to
If successful, this imaging method could help doctors detect pulmonary arterial hypertension earlier, potentially leading to faster treatment and better outcomes.
What could go wrong
This is a very early, small study (71 participants) focused on imaging, not treatment. The tracer may not reliably distinguish disease from healthy tissue, and results may not apply to all patients.
