New study aims to sharpen detection of breast cancer metastases

NCT ID NCT07523516

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study will compare two types of scans—PET/CT and CT—to see which is better at finding distant spread of breast cancer. About 97 patients with advanced breast cancer will receive both scans within a few weeks. The goal is to improve early staging and guide treatment to improve survival and quality of life.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

F18-FDG (a radioactive tracer used in PET/CT scans)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could show that PET/CT is more accurate than standard CT for finding cancer spread, leading to better treatment decisions and outcomes.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage study (97 participants) that has not yet started recruiting. Results may not apply to all breast cancer patients, and the tracer involves radiation exposure.
