New scanner aims to sharpen cancer scans

NCT ID NCT07242690

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This pilot study tests whether a newer type of CT scanner (photon counting detector CT, or PCD-CT) can improve the quality of PET images for people with head and neck cancer. Twenty adults who are already scheduled for a standard PET-CT scan will also receive a PCD-CT scan. Researchers will compare the images to see if the new scanner provides clearer pictures and better diagnostic confidence.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Photon counting detector CT (PCD-CT) imaging

What this could lead to

If successful, this could show that PCD-CT provides clearer PET images, potentially leading to better diagnosis and treatment planning for head and neck cancer.

What could go wrong

This is a very small pilot study (20 people) that is currently suspended. It only compares image quality and does not test any treatment or direct patient benefit.
