Could a simple silicone ring prevent preterm birth?
NCT ID NCT02901626
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether a soft silicone ring, called an Arabin pessary, can help prevent preterm birth (before 37 weeks) in women carrying a single baby who have a short cervix. The trial involves 544 participants and compares those who receive the pessary to those who do not. The goal is to see if this simple device can reduce the risk of early delivery or fetal death.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Arabin cervical pessary (a soft silicone device placed around the cervix)
What this could lead to
If effective, this simple device could offer a non-surgical way to reduce preterm births in women with a short cervix, potentially improving newborn health.
What could go wrong
This is a Phase 3 trial, but the device may not significantly reduce preterm delivery. Risks include discomfort, infection, or device displacement.
