This study looks at whether a protein called periostin, found inside spinal discs, matches the degree of disc degeneration seen on MRI scans. Researchers will collect disc tissue from 20 people undergoing spinal surgery for conditions like herniated discs or lumbar stenosis. They will stain the tissue to measure periostin levels and compare them with the standard Pfirrmann grading system, which rates degeneration from mild to severe. The goal is to see if periostin could serve as a direct marker of disc wear-and-tear.
