Could a simple inhaler shield lungs during cancer surgery?

NCT ID NCT04536675

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This phase 3 trial tests whether a daily inhaler containing two bronchodilators (vilanterol and umeclidinium) can help preserve lung function and improve quality of life in people with mild-to-moderate COPD who are undergoing lung cancer surgery. About 204 participants will use the inhaler or a placebo for at least 2 weeks before surgery and 16 weeks after. The main goal is to see if the treatment prevents the expected drop in lung function after surgery.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Vilanterol and Umeclidinium Bromide (daily inhaler)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could help people with mild-to-moderate COPD maintain better lung function and quality of life after lung cancer surgery.

What could go wrong

This is a relatively small, early-phase trial focused on a specific group (COPD patients having lung cancer surgery). The results may not apply to others, and the benefit over placebo may be modest.
