Dental implant gum disease: new study tests gentler cleaning method

NCT ID NCT05899933

First seen Apr 21, 2026 · Last updated Jun 22, 2026 · Updated 9 times

Summary

This study compares two surgical treatments for peri-implantitis, a gum infection around dental implants. One method reshapes the implant surface (implantoplasty), while the other uses an erythritol air-abrasive device to clean it. Researchers will check which approach works better at reducing pocket depth, bleeding, and bacteria over one year. The trial involves 45 adults with at least one infected implant.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

erythritol air-abrasive device

What this could lead to

If successful, this could show that a less invasive cleaning method works as well as reshaping the implant, offering a simpler treatment option for peri-implantitis.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage trial with only 45 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. Both procedures are surgical and carry risks like infection or implant failure.
