First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study is testing whether applying peppermint oil to the skin can reduce chronic pain and improve daily function in people with fibromyalgia. Researchers will also look at whether this treatment is cost-effective compared to standard care. About 175 adults with fibromyalgia will apply peppermint oil to tender points on their body and report their pain levels and quality of life.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
peppermint oil
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a simple, low-cost way to ease chronic pain and improve daily function for people with fibromyalgia.
What could go wrong
This is an early-stage study with no placebo group, so results may be due to expectation rather than the oil itself. Peppermint oil can also cause skin irritation or allergic reactions in some people.
