Simple breathing therapy may cut pneumonia risk after hip fracture surgery
NCT ID NCT07189260
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether using a positive expiratory pressure (PEP) device before and after hip fracture surgery can prevent hospital-acquired pneumonia. About 566 patients will either receive the PEP therapy plus standard care or standard care alone. The goal is to see if this simple breathing exercise reduces lung infections, a common and serious complication after surgery.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
positive expiratory pressure (PEP) device
What this could lead to
If it works, this simple breathing therapy could become a standard way to prevent pneumonia after hip fracture surgery, reducing complications and deaths.
What could go wrong
This is a single trial with 566 participants, and the therapy requires active patient cooperation, which may be hard for some. It may not show a clear benefit over standard care.
