Could a common Blood-Flow drug tame rheumatoid arthritis?

NCT ID NCT06998628

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026

Summary

This Phase 2 trial tests whether adding pentoxifylline (a drug usually used for blood flow) to standard methotrexate therapy can reduce inflammation in people with active rheumatoid arthritis. Fifty adults aged 18–70 with moderate-to-severe disease will receive the combination for a set period. The main goal is to see if their disease activity score (DAS28) improves.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Pentoxifylline (a blood-flow medication) added to standard methotrexate therapy

What this could lead to

If it works, this could point toward a new, affordable add-on treatment to better control rheumatoid arthritis inflammation.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early Phase 2 trial with only 50 participants. Pentoxifylline is not a proven arthritis drug, and results may not lead to a new standard treatment.
