Brain shrinkage as a crystal ball for MS progression?
NCT ID NCT07753928
First seen Aug 10, 2026 · Last updated Aug 11, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This observational study follows about 2,400 people with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (MS) across Germany for up to six years. It asks whether loss of volume in the thalamus—a deep brain region—tracks with worsening disability, measured by the EDSS scale. Using standard MRI scans and deep-learning analysis, researchers will compare changes in brain volume to changes in disability over time. No extra procedures are required beyond routine care, and the goal is to see if thalamus shrinkage could serve as a reliable marker of disease progression.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- What this could lead to
- If confirmed, measuring thalamus volume on routine MRI could help predict disability progression in MS, guiding earlier or more personalized treatment decisions.
- What could go wrong
- This is an observational study, so it cannot prove cause and effect. The association may not hold across all patients, and MRI measures can vary between centers and over time.
