New hope for stubborn high cholesterol: pemafibrate trial launches
NCT ID NCT07634484
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests a drug called pemafibrate in 120 adults with high cholesterol that remains high even after taking statins. Participants will take either a low or higher dose of pemafibrate or a placebo pill daily for 12 weeks. The goal is to see if pemafibrate can safely lower cholesterol levels further.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Pemafibrate
What this could lead to
If successful, pemafibrate could offer an additional treatment option for people with high cholesterol that is not fully controlled by statins alone.
What could go wrong
This is a relatively small, short-term study (12 weeks) testing a drug already on the market, so it is unlikely to lead to a major breakthrough. The benefit may be modest and not apply to everyone.
