Push-Button sedation: patients take the wheel during colonoscopy

NCT ID NCT07653867

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study compares two ways of giving the sedative propofol during a routine colonoscopy: either the patient pushes a button to self-administer small doses, or a nurse gives the drug as needed. Researchers want to see if self-administration leads to higher patient satisfaction. About 135 adults scheduled for a diagnostic colonoscopy will take part.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

propofol

What this could lead to

If it works, this could give patients more comfort and control during colonoscopy procedures.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-phase trial (135 people) testing a new way to give an existing drug, so results may not apply broadly. There is also a risk of over- or under-sedation with patient control.
