Can online or group programs stop teen depression before it starts?

NCT ID NCT04290754

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests two different programs designed to prevent depression in teenagers who are at risk. One program is an online course called CATCH-IT, and the other is an 8-session group program called TEAMS. About 636 teens aged 13-19 with mild depressive symptoms but no current depression are taking part across several states. Researchers will compare how well each program works and how acceptable they are to teens and families.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

CATCH-IT (online program) and TEAMS (group program)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could provide effective, scalable ways to prevent depression in teenagers before it starts.

What could go wrong

This is a comparative effectiveness trial, not a test of a new drug. Results may show one program is better, but neither may be widely adopted. The study also includes a smaller COVID-era cohort, which may affect consistency.
