Karate and walking tested as new tools for personality disorder management

NCT ID NCT07341438

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

The PANDA trial is testing whether a walking program or supervised karate training are safe and acceptable for adults with borderline or avoidant personality disorders. About 60 participants will be randomly assigned to usual treatment alone, usual treatment plus walking, or usual treatment plus karate for 8 weeks. The study will measure attendance, safety, and whether participants stick with the programs, to see if a larger trial is possible.

Active substance

walking program and supervised karate training

What this could lead to

If successful, this could pave the way for a larger study to see if physical activity like walking or karate can improve health and well-being for people with personality disorders.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early feasibility trial with only 60 participants, so results may not apply widely. The study focuses on whether the programs are possible, not yet on whether they work.
