Surgeons try glue to seal pancreas after cancer surgery
NCT ID NCT07132541
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026
Summary
This early-phase trial tests whether injecting a medical glue (Histoacryl®) into the pancreas during Whipple surgery can strengthen the connection between the pancreas and intestine and prevent dangerous leaks. The study involves 30 patients with soft pancreases and narrow ducts, who are at higher risk for leaks. Researchers will track how many develop a pancreatic fistula, pancreatitis, or other complications.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- N-butyl-2-cyanoacrylate (Histoacryl®) tissue adhesive
- What this could lead to
- If this works, it could offer a simple way to lower the risk of pancreatic leaks after Whipple surgery, potentially reducing complications and hospital stays.
- What could go wrong
- This is a very early phase 1 trial with only 30 patients. The glue may not reduce leaks as hoped, and there are risks of allergic reaction or tissue damage. Success in this small study may not apply to all patients.
