Transplant study digs into gut chemistry to uncover blood sugar mysteries
NCT ID NCT02234349
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study looks at how pancreas-kidney transplantation changes bile acids and gut-related metabolism in people with type 1 diabetes and kidney disease. Researchers will measure bile acid levels and glucose responses in 50 transplant patients, comparing them to kidney-only transplant patients and healthy controls. The goal is to understand why some patients still have abnormal blood sugar after transplantation.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
pancreas-kidney transplantation
What this could lead to
If successful, this could help doctors understand why some transplant patients still have blood sugar problems, possibly leading to better treatments.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early pilot study with only 50 participants. It is designed to observe changes, not to test a new treatment, so it may not lead to direct patient benefits.
