New care model aims to ease suffering for blood cancer patients

This study is testing whether adding a specialized palliative care team to standard cancer treatment improves the experience for patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) or myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS). The palliative care team focuses on managing pain, fatigue, anxiety, and other symptoms, while also helping patients and families discuss care preferences and cope with the emotional challenges of serious illness. Researchers are comparing this combined approach to standard cancer care alone to see which better improves quality of life, symptom control, and end-of-life planning.
