Nerve block may cut painkiller use in kids' spine surgery
NCT ID NCT07404995
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 2 times
Summary
This study tested whether a nerve block called erector spinae plane block (ESPB) can reduce pain and the amount of anesthesia needed during and after tethered cord surgery in children. The trial involved 73 children aged 18 and under. The goal was to see if the block lowers pain scores and the need for rescue painkillers in the first 24 hours after surgery.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
erector spinae plane block (local anesthetic injection)
What this could lead to
If effective, this nerve block could reduce pain and the need for strong painkillers in children after tethered cord surgery, leading to faster recovery.
What could go wrong
This is a small, single-center study. The nerve block may not work for all children, and there is a small risk of side effects like bleeding or infection.
