Which additive makes a nerve block last longer for thyroidectomy pain?
NCT ID NCT05793060
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether adding dexmedetomidine or dexamethasone to a standard numbing medicine (bupivacaine) can improve pain control after thyroid removal. Sixty adults undergoing total thyroidectomy will receive one of the two combinations via an ultrasound-guided nerve block. Researchers will track pain scores and side effects for 24 hours after surgery.
What this could mean

- Active substance
- Dexmedetomidine and dexamethasone (added to bupivacaine for a nerve block)
- What this could lead to
- If one drug works better, it could provide longer-lasting pain relief after thyroid surgery, helping patients recover more comfortably.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, early-phase trial with only 60 participants. Results may not apply to everyone, and side effects like slow heart rate or nausea are possible.
