New pain shot could cut opioid use after throat cancer surgery

NCT ID NCT05862792

First seen Nov 01, 2025 · Last updated May 15, 2026 · Updated 16 times

Summary

This study tests whether injecting a long-lasting anesthetic (EXPAREL) into the surgical wound during robotic throat surgery can reduce pain, lower the need for opioids, and help patients swallow better after the operation. About 80 adults with oropharyngeal cancer will take part. Half will receive the injection plus standard care, and half will receive standard care alone. The goal is to see if this simple addition improves recovery without added risks.
