Safer pain relief after liver surgery? new block tested against epidural
NCT ID NCT07642336
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study compares two ways to manage pain after open liver surgery: a newer erector spinae plane block (ESPB) and the standard thoracic epidural. Sixty adults having elective open liver resection will be randomly assigned to one method. The goal is to see if ESPB provides similar pain relief with fewer risks, especially bleeding complications.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Ropivacaine (a numbing medication) given via two different procedures: erector spinae plane block or thoracic epidural
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that erector spinae plane block is a safer alternative to epidural for pain control after open liver surgery, reducing bleeding risks.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage trial with only 60 participants. The new block may not work as well as the standard epidural, and individual results may vary.
