New study aims to improve pain control for kids after hip surgery

NCT ID NCT07385352

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study compares two medicines, dexmedetomidine and ketamine, added to a standard painkiller (bupivacaine) given through a caudal block to control pain after hip surgery in children aged 1 to 6 years. The goal is to see which combination provides better pain relief, lasts longer, and reduces the need for extra pain medicine. Fifty-four children will take part, and their pain will be measured using a special scale for the first 24 hours after surgery.

What this could lead to

If it works, this could point toward a safer, longer-lasting pain relief option for children after hip surgery.
