New pain block could replace epidurals in pancreatic surgery

NCT ID NCT06411795

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether a rectus sheath block using long-acting liposomal bupivacaine can control pain as well as the standard thoracic epidural after pancreatic surgery. About 78 adults undergoing open pancreaticoduodenectomy will be randomly assigned to one of the two methods. The goal is to see if the new block reduces opioid use and avoids the low blood pressure risk linked to epidurals.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Liposomal bupivacaine

What this could lead to

If it works, this could offer a safer, equally effective pain control option after pancreatic surgery, reducing the risk of low blood pressure from epidurals.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-phase trial (78 people) testing non-inferiority, so it may not prove the new block is truly as good. Results may not apply to all patients.
