First seen May 07, 2026 · Last updated Jun 20, 2026 · Updated 11 times
Summary
This study compares two ultrasound-guided nerve blocks—serratus intercostal plane block and erector spinae plane block—for pain control after open kidney removal. 132 adults scheduled for elective open nephrectomy will be randomly assigned to receive one of the two blocks. The goal is to see which block provides better pain relief and reduces the need for opioids, helping patients recover faster with fewer side effects.

What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
bupivacaine (a local anesthetic)
What this could lead to
If one block works better, it could offer a safer, more effective way to manage pain after kidney surgery, reducing opioid use and speeding recovery.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage comparison study, not a large confirmatory trial. Results may not apply to all patients or surgeries, and individual responses to nerve blocks vary.
