New pain block study aims to get hip surgery patients moving faster
NCT ID NCT07442721
First seen Mar 16, 2026 · Last updated Jun 23, 2026 · Updated 11 times
Summary
This study compares two types of nerve blocks—sacral erector spinae plane block and pericapsular nerve group block—for pain relief after hip hemiarthroplasty. Eighty adults aged 50-90 with a hip fracture will receive one of the blocks before surgery. Researchers will measure pain scores at rest and during movement over 24 hours to see which block provides better pain control while preserving leg strength for early walking.

What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
nerve block (sacral erector spinae plane block or pericapsular nerve group block)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could identify a better pain-blocking technique for hip surgery, reducing opioid use and speeding recovery.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage trial with only 80 participants. Results may not apply to all patients, and the blocks may not work as well in practice.
