Nerve block showdown: which eases gallbladder surgery pain best?

NCT ID NCT07241949

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study compares two types of nerve blocks (paravertebral block and external oblique intercostal block) to standard pain medicine for people having gallbladder removal surgery. About 147 adults will be randomly assigned to one of three groups to see which approach reduces pain and the need for opioids in the first 24 hours after surgery. The goal is to find a better way to manage pain and speed up recovery.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

bupivacaine (a numbing medicine) and tramadol (a painkiller)

What this could lead to

If one block works better, it could mean less pain and fewer opioids after gallbladder surgery, helping patients recover faster.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage trial, so results may not apply to everyone. Both blocks are procedures with rare risks like infection or bleeding.
