New oxygen strategy may reduce lung collapse after spine surgery

First seen Feb 01, 2026 · Last updated May 12, 2026 · Updated 16 times

Summary

This study looks at whether using a special monitor (oxygen reserve index) to adjust oxygen levels during spine surgery can reduce lung collapse after the procedure. About 74 adults having back surgery will be split into two groups: one gets standard oxygen, the other gets oxygen fine-tuned using the monitor. The goal is to see if the smarter approach leads to better lung function and less collapse.
