New filter may protect tiny blood vessels during heart surgery
NCT ID NCT04201119
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tested whether the Oxiris membrane, a filter used during heart-lung machine support, can reduce inflammation and improve blood flow in small blood vessels after heart surgery. 70 adults having elective heart surgery with a long bypass time took part. The membrane aims to remove inflammatory substances from the blood, potentially preventing microcirculation problems that often occur after such operations.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Oxiris membrane (a device used during heart-lung machine to filter inflammatory substances from the blood)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could point toward a way to reduce complications after heart surgery by improving blood flow in tiny vessels.
What could go wrong
This is a small pilot study with only 70 people, so results may not apply widely. The membrane is used only during surgery, and long-term benefits are uncertain.
