New hearing test could uncover 'Hidden' hearing loss without needles or anesthesia
NCT ID NCT04198909
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study aims to refine a non-invasive hearing test called electrocochleography (EcoG) to better detect hidden hearing loss — a condition where standard hearing tests appear normal but auditory nerve fibers are damaged. Researchers will test 220 healthy volunteers aged 18-55 to establish normal values and optimize the technique. The goal is to make the test easier and more accessible for routine use.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
What this could lead to
If successful, this could lead to a better, non-invasive way to diagnose hidden hearing loss early.
What could go wrong
This is an early-stage optimization study in healthy volunteers, not a treatment trial. The method may not prove reliable enough for clinical use.
