Eye ultrasound may reveal stroke side

NCT ID NCT06492681

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026

Summary

This study looked at whether measuring the optic nerve sheath with ultrasound can help identify which side of the brain is affected in suspected stroke patients. Researchers measured the nerve sheath in 19 adults in the emergency department and compared it to their physical exam findings. The goal was to see if this quick, non-invasive test could help guide stroke diagnosis.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If this method proves reliable, it could offer a quick, non-invasive way to help diagnose stroke in emergency rooms.

What could go wrong

This is a very small, completed study with only 19 participants. The results may not apply to all stroke patients, and the technique needs much more testing before it can be used in practice.
