Smartwatch could spot opioid withdrawal symptoms
NCT ID NCT06487533
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study is testing whether a smartwatch can pick up on body changes—like skin temperature—that happen during opioid withdrawal and cravings. Twenty people with opioid use disorder will wear the device for 14 days while their symptoms are tracked. The goal is to see if the watch's readings match up with standard withdrawal and craving scales.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
What this could lead to
If successful, this could lead to better ways to detect and manage opioid withdrawal and cravings using wearable devices.
What could go wrong
This is a very small, early-stage study (20 people) focused on measuring signals, not testing a treatment. It may not lead to any practical tool or change in care.
