New pill packaging aims to curb opioid overprescribing after surgery
NCT ID NCT04598074
First seen Jun 26, 2026 ยท Last updated Jun 26, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether a special child-resistant blister pack with clear labeling can help reduce how many opioid pills are prescribed and used after orthopedic surgery. About 352 adults will receive either the new packaging or the standard orange bottle. Researchers will track the number of pills prescribed and used, and see if the new pack improves safety and reduces leftover medication.

- Active substance
- Opioid Package Prototype (special blister pack)
- What this could lead to
- If it works, this could lead to safer opioid use after surgery by reducing the number of pills prescribed and leftover pills at home.
- What could go wrong
- This is an early feasibility study, not a large-scale trial. The packaging may not change prescribing habits or patient use as hoped, and results may not apply to other settings.
