Opioid-Free anesthesia: a safer way to wake up after Weight-Loss surgery?
NCT ID NCT07337135
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tested whether avoiding opioids during weight-loss surgery leads to less pain and fewer side effects like nausea. Sixty adults having laparoscopic bariatric surgery were randomly assigned to receive either opioid-free anesthesia (using other drugs) or standard opioid-based anesthesia. Researchers measured pain scores, need for extra painkillers, and nausea after surgery.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Opioid-free anesthesia (dexmedetomidine, ketamine, lidocaine) vs opioid-based anesthesia (remifentanil)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that avoiding opioids during weight-loss surgery reduces side effects like nausea and speeds recovery.
What could go wrong
This is a small, single-center trial with only 60 patients, so results may not apply broadly. The opioid-free approach may not control pain as well for everyone.
