Battle of the scalpels: which varicocele surgery is better?

NCT ID NCT07353164

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study compared open surgery versus laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery for varicocele, a condition where veins around the testicle become enlarged. 100 men aged 20–60 were randomly assigned to one of the two procedures. Researchers measured how long the operation took, how many days patients stayed in the hospital, and whether wound infections occurred.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If one method proves clearly better, it could guide surgeons toward a preferred technique for varicocele repair.

What could go wrong

This is a small, single-center study with only 100 participants, so results may not apply to all patients or settings.
