No therapist needed: online mindfulness may quiet tinnitus distress
NCT ID NCT07183826
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests a 6-week, internet-based mindfulness program for adults with chronic tinnitus—a condition that can cause anxiety, depression, and poor quality of life. The program includes guided meditations and cognitive exercises, with no therapist support. Researchers will compare the mindfulness group to a wait-list group, measuring changes in tinnitus distress, anxiety, and depression right after the program and again at one and six months later.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Internet-based Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (iMBCT)
- What this could lead to
- If it works, this could offer a convenient, therapist-free online option to help people with chronic tinnitus feel less distressed and anxious.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, early-stage trial with only 78 participants and no active comparison group, so results may not apply widely. The program is self-guided, so some people may not complete it or benefit.
