Can a nausea drug stop propofol pain? new trial investigates
NCT ID NCT07632144
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This trial compares ondansetron (a common anti-nausea drug) against lidocaine and a placebo for preventing pain when propofol is injected to start anesthesia. About 156 adults having elective surgery will be randomly assigned to one of three groups. The goal is to see if ondansetron reduces the number of people who feel pain and how intense that pain is.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
ondansetron
What this could lead to
If it works, ondansetron could offer a new option to ease injection pain during anesthesia induction.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage trial with only 156 participants, so results may not apply widely. The effect may be no better than lidocaine or placebo.
