Skipping sentinel node biopsy may be safe for older breast cancer patients

NCT ID NCT02564848

First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Aug 11, 2026 · Updated 4 times

Summary

This study looks at whether women aged 65 and older with early-stage, estrogen-positive breast cancer can safely have a lumpectomy without also removing and testing nearby lymph nodes (sentinel node biopsy). The goal is to see if skipping this extra step leads to cancer coming back in the lymph nodes. Two hundred women are being followed over time to check for recurrence and survival.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
lumpectomy without sentinel node biopsy
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that older women with low-risk breast cancer can safely avoid an extra surgical procedure, reducing side effects and recovery time.
What could go wrong
This is a single-arm study with no comparison group, and the outcome depends on careful patient selection. It may not apply to all older women or those with more aggressive cancer.
