Could a common antidepressant supercharge lung cancer treatment?
NCT ID NCT06554613
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 2 times
Summary
This phase 2 trial is testing whether adding the antidepressant olanzapine to standard immunotherapy (nivolumab) helps people with advanced EGFR-negative non-small cell lung cancer live longer. About 156 participants will receive either the combination or immunotherapy alone for 6-8 weeks. Researchers will track overall survival and side effects to see if the combination is more effective.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Olanzapine (an antidepressant) combined with nivolumab (an immunotherapy drug)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could point toward a more effective first-line treatment for advanced lung cancer by boosting the immune system's response.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-phase trial, so results may not be conclusive. Olanzapine can cause side effects like drowsiness and weight gain, and the combination may not improve outcomes.
