Heart stent study aims to cut bleeding risk with shorter blood thinner course
NCT ID NCT07198529
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 25, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether using a detailed imaging tool called optical coherence tomography (OCT) during heart stent placement can allow patients to stop taking blood thinners sooner. Patients with stable angina who receive a stent typically take two blood thinners for 6 to 12 months to prevent clots, but this raises bleeding risk. The trial will enroll 130 people and give them a shorter, 1-month course of dual therapy if OCT shows the stent is perfectly placed. Researchers hope this approach reduces bleeding without increasing heart attacks or stent clots.

What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
aspirin and clopidogrel (antiplatelet drugs)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could allow patients with stable angina to take blood thinners for a shorter time after stenting, lowering their risk of bleeding while still protecting against heart attacks.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early exploratory study at a single center, so results may not apply broadly. Shorter blood thinner use might increase the risk of stent clots or other heart problems.
