Scientists to wire up brains and homes to decode OCD and bipolar behavior

NCT ID NCT05422469

First seen Jun 26, 2026 ยท Last updated Jun 26, 2026

Summary

This study will follow 12 people with severe OCD or bipolar disorder who are already scheduled to receive deep brain stimulation (DBS). Researchers will use the DBS device to record brain activity while participants wear smart rings, watches, and phones to track sleep, activity, and social behavior. Some measurements will take place in a special apartment-like lab, others at home. The goal is to link brain signals to real-world behaviors and mood, which could lead to better ways to diagnose and treat these conditions.

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only โ€” not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
Medtronic Percept RC neurostimulator (deep brain stimulation device)
What this could lead to
If successful, this study could reveal how brain activity relates to daily behaviors in OCD and bipolar disorder, paving the way for more personalized and effective treatments.
What could go wrong
This is a very small, early-stage observational study (12 people) focused on understanding mechanisms, not testing a treatment. It may not lead to direct clinical benefits or apply to broader populations.
